Problem:
When
dialing up to the internet, the "Verifying Username and Password"
phase take a very long time.
Solution:
This process usually appears
when a new connection to the internet is set up by clicking on the "Make
New Connection" option in the "Dial-Up Networking" folder. While
this is a fast way to create a new connection, it skips many steps that
can cause symptoms such as the abnormally long dialup time described above.
To fix this issue, please follow these steps:
-
Double click on the "My Computer" icon on the Windows 95 or 98 desktop.
-
Double click on the "Dial-Up Networking" folder.
-
In the next window that shows up, there should be some items inside. You
may see one of the following: "ISDN", "Kearney.net", or "Connection
to 865-6636". Click once on this connection (If you have all
three, perform this procedure on all of them).
-
Now, go to the "File" menu, and click "Properties".
-
The next window that pops up will have several options on it. Click on
the "Server Types" tab across the top ("Server Types" may
also be a button toward the bottom of the window; if this is the case,
press the "Server Types" button).
-
In the next screen that pops up, there will be several check boxes. Make
sure that the ONLY check boxes that have checks in them are: "Enable
Software Compression" and "TCP/IP". If any other boxes have
checks in them, uncheck them. The correct options that should be checked
are shown in Figure 1 below, and are circled in red.
-
Click "OK", and "OK" again if necessary.
-
Do these steps, and you're done.
