Tutorial By Marc Hoffman

Problem: The "Save Password" box is checked before dialing up on the internet. The next time the computer tries to dial up to the internet, the password isn't typed in, and the "Save Password" box is unchecked. The password refuses to save. (Note: this is not the same problem as a "ghosted" save password box. For the solution to that problem, please click here).

Solution: This problem is most likely caused by a corrupted Password List File, and can occur on both Windows 95 and Windows 98. The best course of action is to move and rename the old password list and allow Windows to create a new one. Please note that any passwords that have been entered into Windows (ranging from the dialup password to email passwords to any other program on the computer that requires a password) will have to be re-entered. One exception to this is the Content Advisor, which has a more secure password location. To repair the corrupted password list problem, please follow the steps below. It is always recommended that this tutorial be printed out, as it is always easier to follow the steps if they are printed.

  1. Click on the "Start" Menu, point to "Find", and click on "Files or Folders".
  2. In the window that pops up, make sure that the "Look In" box has the text "C:" printed in it. There may be a name just before the "C:". This is fine, and normal. Just make sure that there is nothing after the "C:" (for example, "C:\documents" or "My Documents"). If this is the case, click the down arrow to the right of the "Look In" box and choose the "C:" drive.
  3. Now, in the box labeled "Named", type in the following text, with NO spaces, and without the quotes: "*.pwl"
  4. Click the "Find Now" button, or press the "Enter" key on the keyboard.
  5. One or more items should begin showing up in the bottom pane of the find window. The item(s) will take the form of "username.pwl". For example, if the username is "mhoffman", then the name that should appear in the bottom pane would be "mhoffman.pwl".
  6. Click on this file, and drag it out to the Windows Desktop.
  7. Close the "Find" window. Now, RIGHT-CLICK on the password list file that was just moved. This is done by using the right mouse button and clicking once on the file. A menu should pop out to the side. Click on "Rename".
  8. Type in the name "password.old".
  9. Restart Windows by clicking on the "Start" Menu and clicking on "Shut Down". On the window that pops up, click on "Restart the Computer", and then click "OK" or "YES".
  10. Once Windows boots back up, a screen may come up asking for a username and password to log onto Windows. Type any name desired in the "Username" box. DO NOT TYPE A PASSWORD. Instead, press the "OK" button. Windows will now ask to verify or confirm the new password. Click "OK" again. Windows will now boot normally.
  11. Do these steps, and you're done.
