Tutorial By Marc Hoffman

Problem: When trying to dial up to the internet, the the "save password" box is ghosted.

Solution: This problem is most prominent on Windows 95, but has been known to happen on Windows 98 as well. It happens when the Windows Network is missing either "Client for Microsoft Networks" or "Microsoft Family Logon". To add one of these items to your Windows Network, please read the following steps. Remember, before proceeding, the Windows 95 or Windows 98 CD is required, as some of the files being copied to the computer are only on the original CD. It is also recommended that this page be printed so that it will be easier to follow the instructions step by step, as the computer will need to be restarted during this tutorial.

  1. Place the Windows 95 or Windows 98 CD in the CD ROM drive. If a screen immediately pops up, close it by clicking on the "X" in the upper right corner of the screen.
  2. Click the "Start" Menu, point to "Settings", and click on "Control Panel".
  3. Once the Control Panel window pops up, find the control panel marked "Network".
  4. On the window that pops up, there should be a listing of network components. Look carefully at each one to see if "Client for Microsoft Networks" or "Microsoft Family Logon" is present. If neither one of these is present, please continue reading. If one or both of these are present, please call Kearney.Net's tech line at 865-4736 or email us at support@isdnllc.com and we will be happy to help you.
  5. Now, click on the "Add" button.
  6. A list of options will appear with four options. Click once on "Client". Now, click once on the "Add" button.
  7. A list of manufacturers should appear on the left. Click once on "Microsoft".
  8. The list of options on the right hand side of the window will change. Look for either "Client for Microsoft Networks" or "Microsoft Family Logon". If both are present, click once on "Microsoft Family Logon", and then click "OK". If only "Client for Microsoft Networks" is present, click once on it, and then click "OK".
  9. After completing the previous step, either Client for Microsoft Networks or Microsoft Family Logon will have been added to the list of network components. Click on the "OK" button near the bottom right of the window.
  10. Windows will now copy the files needed to the hard drive from the Windows 95 or 98 CD. If any messages pop up with the warning: "Version Conflict: A file being copied is older than the file currently on your computer. It is recommended that you keep your existing file. Do you want to keep your existing file?" Click on "NO" to all instances of this message. It may appear three to five times.
  11. Windows will now ask to be restarted. Remove the Windows 95 or 98 CD from the CD ROM drive, and then click on "Yes".
  12. Once Windows boots back up, a screen may come up asking for a username and password to log onto Windows. Type any name desired in the "Username" box. DO NOT TYPE A PASSWORD. Instead, press the "OK" button. Windows will now ask to verify or confirm the new password. Click "OK" again. Windows will now boot normally.
  13. Do these steps, and you're done.
