How to Upload a Webpage to the Kearney.net Server Using a Windows Computer

Everyone who subscribes to our service has a place on our server for a 2mb webpage. You can access yours by using a standard FTP program.

If you're using Windows 95/98, we recommend using WS_FTP located on our homepage at this link:

http://www.kearney.net/services.html

To access your homepage, you need to use your dialup username and password.

When accessing your homepage, you will be able to find it at an address similar to the following:

http://www.kearney.net/~<your dialup username goes here>

So, for example, to access my own webpage, I type in the following:

http://www.kearney.net/~mhoffman

The strange looking little character before the username (~) is called a "tilde", and is located in the upper right corner of your keyboard. You will need to shift to type it.

First, however, you'll have to create your webpage. To do this, we recommend using Netscape Communicator, which can be downloaded for free by going to

http://home.netscape.com/computing/download/index.html?cp=hom09tdow

and clicking on the version of Communicator that you want. Right now, the program is up to version 4.61. You will need to use the "Composer" component of Communicator to create a webpage. When your webpage is created, remember to name the first page "index.html".

Now, you'll need to download WS_FTP using the link:

http://www.kearney.net/download/wsftp95/ws_ftple.zip

You will need a program to decompress the file. We recommend WinZip which can be found at:

http://www.winzip.com

After you've installed WS_FTP and run it, you'll be faced with a "Session Properties" requester. Before you do anything, hit the "New" button. This will clear all the fields that you'll fill in with your user information:

This is what the Session Properties box looks like after the NEW button is pressed.

Next, fill in your user information, similar to the way in which is shown in figure 2. The User ID and Password blanks will, of course, be your dialup username and password. Be sure that the Host Name/Address reads www.kearney.net, and make sure that it's in all lower case. This holds true for your username and password as well. If they contain CAPs or spaces of any kind, things will not work. Make sure that you check the "Save Password" box so that you will not have to re-type your password the next time you log in. These steps are shown in Figure 2 below:

Now, go to the Startup tab, as shown in Figure 3. In the "Initial Remote Host
Directory" blank, type in public_html as is also shown in Figure 3:

Now, you're ready to connect. Just hit the "OK" button in the bottom left, and you'll see the contents of your webpage in the right column. The left column represents your hard drive. Once you have your webpage all set up and ready to go on your hard drive, you'll select the files from the left column and copy them to the right column.
