How to Identify Which E-Mail Program You are Using in Windows 95, 98, or NT


This tutorial applies to Windows 95, 98, or Windows NT users who wish to find out what email program they are using so that the outbound mail server can be changed. The type of email program on your Windows system is directly related to which version of Internet Explorer you have running on your machine. With each new version of Internet Explorer, Microsoft changes the email setup. Please read the following steps:

1. Click on your "Start" button, point to "Settings", and click on "Control Panel".

2. Double click on the control panel that is marked "Internet" or "Internet Options". If the window that comes up looks like the one shown in Figure 1 below, please proceed to the Windows Messaging/Microsoft Exchange Tutorial by clicking here.

2. If your window looks like the one shown in Figure 2, click on the "Programs" tab across the top of the screen. This step is circled in red in Figure 2.

  • If the words "Internet Mail" are typed in the box circled in red, please proceed to the Internet Mail 1.0 tutorial by clicking here.
  • If the words "Pegasus Mail" are typed in the box circled in red, please proceed to the Pegasus Mail tutorial by clicking here.
  • If the words "Eudora" or "Eudora Light" are typed in the box circled in red, please proceed to the Eudora Tutorial by clicking here.
  • If the words "Microsoft Outlook" show up in the box, please call our tech support line at 865-4736, as Outlook 97 and 98 can prove to be somewhat unpredictable in their methods of setup.

3. If your internet control panel looks like the windows shown in Figure 3 or Figure 4, click on the "Programs" tab as is circled in red in figures 3 and 4.

  • If the text in the box circled in red reads "Outlook Express", please proceed to the Outlook Express Tutorial by clicking here.
  • If the words "Internet Mail" are typed in the box circled in red, please proceed to the Internet Mail 1.0 tutorial by clicking here.
  • If the words "Pegasus Mail" are typed in the box circled in red, please proceed to the Pegasus Mail tutorial by clicking here.
