How to Change the Outbound Mail Server In Netscape Communicator
This tutorial applies to both the Macintosh and
Windows (Windows 3.11, Windows 95/98 and Windows NT) versions of Netscape
Communicator, as the two versions are so similar to one another. To change
the outbound mail server in Communicator, read the following steps:
1. Open Netscape Communicator.
2. Click on the "Help" menu (or the Apple Menu
if you're using a Macintosh), and select "About Communicator".
3. If a screen comes up and reads "Netscape® Communicator
4.0, 4.01, 4.02, 4.03, 4.04, 4.05, or 4.06, please follow step
4. If a screen comes up that says "Netscape® Communicator
4.5, 4.51, 4.6, or 4.61, then proceed to Step
5.
4. Click on the "Edit" menu
across the top of Communicator, and click on the "Preferences" item.
You should see a screen that looks similar to Figure 1 below. On the left
hand side, you should see a tree of options, with plus (+) and minus (-)
signs in front of them if you're using a Windows computer, or triangles
( ) if you're
using a Macintosh. Identify the category in this tree that is labeled "Mail
and Groups" or "Mail and Newsgroups". If you're using a Mac,
click on the Triangle so that it is pointing down ( ).
If you're using a Windows computer, click on the plus sign (+) so that
it turns into a minus (-) sign. More options should appear. Click on the
option that is labeled "Mail Server" (this is circled in red in
Figure 1). The options on the right hand side should change to show the
mail server user name, outgoing mail server, and incoming mail server.
The Outgoing mail server is the box that needs to be changed if its contents
read either "mail.kearney.net" or "mail.unk.net". Delete the mail.kearney.net
or mail.unk.net from the Outgoing Mail Server box, and in its place (using
all lower case letters with NO spaces), type smtp.kearney.net. This
is also circled in red in Figure 1. Click the "OK" button. Do these
steps, and you're done.

5. If you're using Communicator
4.5 or greater, follow these steps. Click on the "Edit"
menu across the top of Communicator, and click on the "Preferences"
item. You should see a screen that looks similar to Figure 1 below. On
the left hand side, you should see a tree of options, with plus (+) and
minus (-) signs in front of them if you're using a Windows computer, or
triangles ( )
if you're using a Macintosh. Identify the category in this tree that is

using a Mac, click on the Triangle so that it is pointing down ( ).
If you're using a Windows computer, click on the plus sign (+) so that
it turns into a minus (-) sign. More options should appear. Find the item
in this tree of options that is labeled "Mail Servers", and click
on it. The options on the right hand side of the screen should change.
A little more than half way down, you should see a box with the label "Outgoing
mail (SMTP) server". In the box, if you have either "mail.unk.net"
or "mail.kearney.net" typed in, delete it. In its place, using lower case
letters and NO spaces, type smtp.kearney.net. These steps are circled
in red in Figure 2 below. After you have finished, click on the "OK"
button. Do these steps, and you're done.
