How to Disable Norton AntiVirus' Email Scanning Feature on Windows 95/98

This tutorial applies to Windows 95 and 98 users who have recently purchased or upgraded to Norton AntiVirus 2000 (also known as Norton AntiVirus 6.0). There is an issue with Norton AntiVirus 2000 that interferes with the way that Kearney.Net's email servers send you your mail. In order to correct this problem, you must turn email protection off. You can still save the email attachment to your Windows Desktop and Norton AntiVirus will automatically scan the attachment for viruses. Please keep in mind that this problem does not occur with Norton AntiVirus for Macintosh computers.

This page is split into two sections. The first part is directed toward those users who are going to be purchasing Norton AntiVirus 2000, but have not yet installed it on their systems. For these steps, please click here.

The second part is set up for those who have already installed Norton AntiVirus 2000, and now their email will not function properly. If this describes your system, please click here.

If you are planning on installing Norton AntiVirus 2000, PLEASE don't enable email protection.

1. When installing Norton AntiVirus from the installer CD or from the direct download off the internet, you will be given several options. When you see a screen similar to the one shown in Figure 1 below, make sure that you DO NOT check the box marked "Enable email protection". This is what interferes with your ability to receive email. This box is circled in red in figure 1.

2. You can proceed with the rest of the installation as normal.

If you have already installed Norton AntiVirus 2000, you need to disable Email protection in order for your email to function properly. Before proceeding with any of these steps, make sure that you are disconnected from the internet, and that your email and internet programs are completely closed.

1. If you have already installed Norton AntiVirus, there is a good chance that it has already reconfigured your email system, and you will not be able to read your email until the damage is undone. To do this, launch the Norton AntiVirus main program (this is done by double-clicking on the Norton AntiVirus icon on the Windows desktop).

2. Once the main screen pops up, you will see something similar to Figure 2 below. Click on the "Options" icon at the top of the screen (this step is circled in red in Figure 2).

3. A new window will pop up similar to Figure 3 below. You will see several options on the left hand side of this new window. Find the one this is labeled "Email Protection" and click on it. Don't click on the plus (+) sign to the left of "Email Protection"; just click on the words "Email Protection".

4. On the right hand side of the screen, you should see a checkbox labeled "Enable Email Protection". UNCHECK this box by clicking in the box. In figure 3 below, this step has a red rectangle drawn around it.

5. Click "OK". Norton AntiVirus will show a warning message that it has unconfigured the email software on your computer. Click "OK" again.

6. Exit Norton AntiVirus 2000 by clicking on the "X" in the upper right corner of the screen.
